The story behind the lifting of Mount Kailash in the legend of Ravana is as follows: Ravana was a great devotee of Shiva, and he once attempted to lift Mount Kailash, so that he could take Lord Shiva to Lanka. During this attempt, Lord Shiva became angry and pressed Mount Kailash with his toe, thereby burying Ravana beneath the mountain. Ravana then composed the Shiva Tandava Stotram to please Shiva.
This story symbolizes Ravana's power and devotion, but it is also the story of the destruction of ego. Despite Ravana's power, he bowed before Lord Shiva and started praising him.
